HOW TO LAYER JEWELLERY: THE MAXIMALIST STAR GIRL GUIDE ★

okay star girls… we need to talk about layering jewellery.

You put on one necklace. Cute.
Then another. Better.
Then suddenly you’re holding three rings, five bangles and an extra chain thinking:

is this too much???

Probably not ★

Welcome to the Moon+Star school of MORE IS MORE, where mixed metals are allowed, colourful jewellery is basically a neutral and an empty wrist is wasted real estate.

If you’ve ever wondered how to layer necklaces, how to stack bracelets or how to stack rings without everything looking completely chaotic, you’re in the right place.

Layering jewellery can feel slightly intimidating when you first start. Which necklace lengths actually work together? Can you mix gold and silver jewellery? How many bangles is too many?

The good news: there are basically no rules.

But after spending a LOT of time styling jewellery stacks, building maximalist looks and finding combinations we’re obsessed with, we do have a few Star Girl secrets to share ★

Open the jewellery box. We’re stacking.

★ FIRST THINGS FIRST: THERE ARE NO RULES ★

Before we start telling you how to layer jewellery, we need to clarify something very important:

your jewellery stack does not have to make sense to anyone except you.

The whole point of maximalist jewellery is creating something that feels personal.

Colours that technically shouldn’t work together? Wear them.

Gold and silver in the same stack? Obviously.

Three necklaces, six rings and enough bangles to announce your arrival before you enter the room?

Even better.

These are just some jewellery styling tips to help you get started. Consider them suggestions, not commandments ★

★ OUR FAVOURITE JEWELLERY LAYERING TIPS ★

1. START WITH ODD NUMBERS

Three necklaces. Five rings. Seven bangles.

There’s something about odd numbers that makes a layered jewellery look feel less planned and more effortlessly thrown together.

If you're completely new to jewellery layering, three pieces is usually the easiest place to start.

Try three necklaces at different lengths, three bracelets with contrasting textures or three rings spread across your hand.

Once you get comfortable?

Keep adding ★

2. MIX YOUR TEXTURES

The easiest way to make a jewellery stack look interesting is to avoid making every piece look exactly the same.

Pair:

★ chunky jewellery with delicate chains
★ pearls with colourful enamel
★ smooth metals with textured pieces
★ statement pendants with simpler necklaces
★ bold bangles with slimmer bracelets

Contrast gives every piece its own moment while still making the overall jewellery stack feel intentional.

3. YES, YOU CAN MIX GOLD + SILVER JEWELLERY

Can you mix gold and silver jewellery?

YES. NEXT QUESTION.

Mixed metal jewellery is one of our favourite ways to make a stack look more interesting.

Instead of treating gold and silver as two completely separate jewellery wardrobes, try wearing them together.

One easy trick is to repeat each metal more than once.

For example:

silver ring ★ gold ring ★ silver bracelet ★ gold necklace

Suddenly it looks intentional instead of accidental.

And obviously you can add colour too.

★ HOW TO LAYER NECKLACES ★

Necklace layering is basically jewellery Tetris.

Every necklace needs its own little space.

The easiest formula for creating a layered necklace stack is:

SHORT + MEDIUM + STATEMENT

Start with a shorter chain close to your neck.

Add a slightly longer necklace underneath.

Then finish with a longer pendant or statement necklace.

The difference in necklace lengths creates separation, makes every piece visible and helps reduce tangling.

★ THE THREE-NECKLACE FORMULA ★

If you're wondering how to layer necklaces for beginners, start with three:

★ one delicate short necklace
★ one medium-length chain
★ one statement pendant

Then build from there.

Our biggest tip?

Don't make every necklace the same length.

When necklaces all sit in exactly the same place, they fight for attention and are much more likely to tangle.

Your statement necklace should be the main character. Everything else is supporting cast.

★ HOW TO STACK BRACELETS + BANGLES ★

Now we’re entering Moon+Star territory.

Bracelet stacking is one of the easiest ways to start wearing maximalist jewellery because you can keep adding pieces until your wrist feels finished.

And our personal philosophy?

Enough is never quite enough.

Start with one statement bracelet or chunky bangle and build around it with slimmer pieces.

Try mixing:

★ colourful enamel bangles
★ chunky metal bracelets
★ gold + silver
★ different widths
★ contrasting colours
★ delicate chains

You don't need every bracelet in your stack to match.

Actually, we prefer when they don't.

The slightly chaotic combinations are usually the best ones.

★ THE EASY BANGLE STACK FORMULA ★

Not sure where to begin?

Try:

ONE STATEMENT BANGLE + TWO COLOURFUL BANGLES + ONE METAL PIECE

Then look at your wrist.

Still feels empty?

You already know what to do ★

★ HOW TO STACK RINGS ★

Fresh nails + an excessive number of rings.

Name a better combination.

Ring stacking gives you loads of freedom because you can completely change the look depending on how you distribute the rings across your hands.

You could:

★ stack multiple rings on one finger
★ wear one ring on every finger
★ keep one hand heavily stacked
★ mix chunky statement rings with delicate pieces
★ create a completely mixed-metal ring stack

If your rings are particularly bold, repeating either the metal, colour or shape somewhere else in the look can help everything feel connected.

But again:

matching is optional.

Personality is not.

★ JEWELLERY LAYERING MISTAKES WE'D AVOID ★

We're not really fans of jewellery “rules”, but there are a few things that can make layering harder than it needs to be.

EVERY NECKLACE BEING THE SAME LENGTH

This is basically a recipe for tangles.

Vary your necklace lengths so each piece has its own space.

FORGETTING ABOUT YOUR OUTFIT'S NECKLINE

Your clothes and jewellery should work together.

A deep neckline can look incredible with longer pendant necklaces, while higher necklines often work beautifully with shorter chains layered above them.

OVERTHINKING WHETHER EVERYTHING MATCHES

Probably the biggest mistake of all.

Your rings do not need to perfectly match your necklace.

Your bangles do not need to match your outfit.

Your gold and silver jewellery are allowed to coexist peacefully.

Sometimes the weird combination is the one that makes the entire look.

★ YOUR MAXIMALIST JEWELLERY STARTER KIT ★

If you're building your first proper jewellery collection, we'd start with a few pieces that can be mixed into loads of different stacks.

You want:

★ one statement pendant necklace
★ one shorter layering necklace
★ one chunky ring
★ one colourful ring
★ two or three bangles
★ one mixed-metal piece

From there, you can keep adding pieces and changing your jewellery combinations depending on your outfit, mood or whatever aesthetic has taken over your Pinterest board that week.

The ultimate goal is a jewellery box where almost everything can be worn together.

Controlled chaos ★

★ LAYERING JEWELLERY FAQ ★

CAN YOU MIX GOLD AND SILVER JEWELLERY?

Absolutely. Mixing gold and silver jewellery is one of the easiest ways to create a more interesting maximalist look. Repeating both metals throughout your outfit can make the combination feel intentional.

HOW MANY NECKLACES SHOULD YOU LAYER?

Three necklaces is a great starting point. Choose different necklace lengths so each piece remains visible and add a statement pendant to create a focal point.

HOW DO YOU LAYER NECKLACES WITHOUT TANGLING?

Choose necklaces of different lengths, avoid using too many identical chain styles and give each pendant enough space to sit separately.

HOW MANY BRACELETS SHOULD YOU STACK?

There is no set number. Start with three or four bracelets or bangles and mix different widths, textures, colours and metals until your stack feels balanced.

CAN YOU MIX DIFFERENT COLOURED JEWELLERY?

Please do.

Colourful jewellery is one of the easiest ways to make a simple outfit feel more personal. Try repeating one colour somewhere else in your stack if you want the combination to feel more connected.

★ FINAL STAR GIRL RULE ★

If you take one thing away from this guide, make it this:

stop asking if it's too much.

Jewellery is supposed to be fun.

Layer the necklaces.

Mix the metals.

Stack the rings.

Add another bangle.

And if someone says you're wearing too much jewellery?

They probably just aren't a Star Girl yet ★
